LEVON HELM DAY
May 20, 2006
Woodstock, New
York
On April 18, 2006 the Town of
Woodstock Town Board unanimously
approved a resolution, declaring Saturday, May 20, 2006 “Levon Helm
Day” in Woodstock. The day began with government officials presenting
Levon with a “key to the village” – at the Town Green in
the Village of Woodstock. The celebration continued throughout
the day with live music played on the Village Green a number of bands
played a much-deserved tribute to Levon and his songs. Mojo
Myles and the Blue Ryders performed a set to about afew hundred spectators.
The Blue Ryders: Bob Jaeger-Bass, Nick Mancuso-Drums and Chris Difrancesco-Sax (see the links below for a few videos of the performance that day.)
Levon
Helm Studios also hosted a “meet & greet” at Levon’s studio just
outside the Village of Woodstock including an outdoor BBQ. There Myles
met Reverend Goat Carson a New Orleans Musician and Native American
Spiritualist who is well known for making and playing a buffalo
jawbone harp. The Reverend heard Myles set earlier in the day
and said to Myles upon meeting him down by Levon's lake; "you're
the hope of the Nation son....more youngsters need to hear the
type of music you play".
The festivities concluded that
night with a concert by The Levon Helm Band at the Woodstock Playhouse there
Myles met Happy Traum, who has been a great influence on Myles' playing
as well and a great source of one-of-a-kind instructional music DVDs
with his company Homespun Videos.
It was a day to remember, many
came out to pay tribute to a true national treasure, Levon
Helm. We would like to thank Barbara and Norm at the Levon Helm organization,
as well as Jim McCann at the Woodstock Chamber of Commerce and of course
Levon Helm for all he has done with and for Myles; it was an honor
to be a part of that day.
